This is an enthralling family saga that shows a deep humanity and amazing pathos. The tale of struggles, grief, triumphs, and the mindful remnants of unspoken and unspeakable ordeals, each of which led to both life and death, and an underlying multigenerational inheritance of shame. The author addresses her own experience of this inheritance, and grapples with what it means to be the offspring of such experiences, such socio-political triumphs and defeats from war, colonialism, ethnic and racial strife. There’s a lot to learn and a lot to glean. There’s so much with which each of us can identify. I highly recommend this read!
