Thoughts on the movie as a male:
After watching the Barbie movie, I decided to go through the reviews to see what other people thought of the movie. The following is different types of low reviews that I have seen.
A. People were not paying attention to the movie.
B. Far right conservatives who fear Barbie
C. Parents who took the kids, thinking it was family friendly.
D. People over thinking the plot of this movie.
I will say overall the plot was kind a confusing. However, instead of saying, “this puts a bad light on men”. It really puts the spotlight on the reality of how men are ruining the real world. for those who are commenting and leaving a one star, saying “I did not understand the movie” maybe next time put the phone down and pay attention. If you are far right conservative, I don’t know why you decided to go see the Barbie movie. Also, depending on how you decide to parent your kids. The movie is PG-13 so I don’t understand how there is any confusion on that (same thing happened when TED came out like ???). Overall, it does shine an important light on how women live day to day. Furthermore, I think men are just uncomfortable with the fact that they had to live in women’s shoes for 2 hours.
Thoughts on marketing:
I think Barbie hit the head on the nail when it came down to Marketing. I’ve seen some people commenting that they spent millions of dollars on Marketing which is fairly true. However, they did a good job promoting the movie and making Barbie a “have to see movie”. All over TikTok, Instagram, and even word of mouth people have been talking about Barbie nonstop. Even after the movie came out. It’s the only thing I see all over my FYP or Instagram feed.
In conclusion:
Barbie has an obvious target audience. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on some of the “gender norms”. Which it is very new to some people so I can understand where they are coming from. Overall, I think this movie has done very well so far and will do nothing but continue to gain popularity. All my friends have seen it (Girls & the gays mainly) and they did a good job at explaining a non-fictional story.
