I loved this gentle, heartfelt and beautiful film! While it could be criticised as a smidge utopian, well-mannered and white, Ladies in Black reflected the Sydney I grew up in (through the ‘60s) quite affectionately and authentically, and subtly canvassed many of the uncomfortable issues prevailing at the time. I loved the use of ensemble acting.....building the story through subplot and dialogue as the individual and collective relationships of each woman adds to inform the whole.
Another film will portray the dystopian aspects of White Australia with no less authenticity and urgency, and I’ll embrace the discomfort of reflecting on those issues as a necessity, given our history.
But for this moment I’m thankful to have seen such a thoughtful, graceful and skillfully made film that leaves me feeling optimistic.
