Just saw the film tonight. They dangled all these very interesting characters in front of us, to only skim the surface with them. It left me wanting to know much more about the russian orthodox mobboss, the concierge/daughter, Mr nobody, the Marquise even! I almost thought the movie didn't need the Marquise. He could have been a hand with a pinky ring, answering the phone while demanding orders, and all we see of him is the back of a lush and expensive looking armchair. I think his character was only made to have the extravagant scenes: the women on the horses, the private ballet, the palace while eating an apple tart, etc.
I did really enjoy Keanu and Yen's fighting. It was creative how they had a visually disabled character as a fighter. Additionally, I was hooting and hollering during the club scene. A lot of people seemed to dislike that they never stopped dancing; I loved it. The KILLA character, with the front grillz, was an absurdist character. So why would the club and people around him be realistic? I thought it fit within that realm perfectly. My favorite scenes by far were surrounding the Russians. I wanted more of them. The church Russians and the Nightclub Russians.
It was also a heartbreaking plot point that Lance Riddick dies so soon into the movie, I wanted to see his character one last time, postmortem for the actor.
John died so suddenly at the end, I hope this isn't the final chapter and we are surprised with another.
