Fun, action packed movie, which really comes alive in the final third. Until then there's an undercurrent of buddy cop movie mixed with angst. As a bit of flashback movie (like Guardians) it has a nifty soundtrack, and some great visuals and cameos of other characters. Critically this movie ties back to the very start of the Avengers Initiative, and ties everything up quite nicely.
It starts a bit jumbled. The movie could actually do with an edit, just to to perhaps remove some of the confusion or tighten up the whole opening mission (to this point the sequence of events and motivations are not very clear, and the twist in the middle confuses things). However this gets tidied up later, if not 100% satisfactorily.
The direction is solid, though at times leaving things on the table that maybe could have done with a bit of polish. The abundance of CGI is to be expected, but where is it is often done extremely well there is at least 1 rubber body plastic doll scene that could have been achieved with wires and after-effects.
It's a healthy 8/10. Not perfect, but one of the better Marvel fares.
