Hope Land

I want to preface this review by saying I’m a huge fan of old movies. One of My favorite movies of all time is the heiress, A movie with a very similar plot to this one. Unfortunately, that one does something very different from this one, which is having an actually good message. This movie does a lot of things good, one of my favorite things being The cast being made up entirely of women. There are no male actors so any men in the movie are referred to offscreen. While clever, this causes a problem later on. this is one of the youngest roles I’ve seen Joan Crawford and she absolutely kills it as the conniving bitch. She is thoroughly entertaining to watch on screen and every time she was the movie a little bit better. All the actors did a pretty swell job and for the most part their banter and catfights are entertaining. The problem I have with this is found in the ending of the movie, but really it shows up throughout all of it. The message of this movie is that if your partner in marriage decides to cheat on you, not only should you take them back with no effort on their part, but you should also crawl back on your hands and knees. Our main character must learn she should have no self-esteem, no self-worth and certainly no pride as a person and let her husband do whatever he wants with any other woman if it makes him happy. Now, if he was willing to put an effort and try to win her back in a reasonable way and apologize for what he did then yeah sure maybe they could make it work. Not only does he cheat on her, He gets mad when she finds out, divorces her, and on the day when the divorce is final, marries the other woman. not once does he try to reconcile or make it up to her anyway. at the end of the movie we find out his new wife is cheating on him (Which Is ironic), And our main character must crawl back and Convince him to marry her again. Now, there are some ways they could’ve done this that would not make him look like a complete asshole and her a complete idiot. But the lack of presence onscreen makes it very hard to sympathize with him. We can only take what we hear from others, which is that he’s kind of a terrible person. This makes the main character look like a complete idiot and Pathetic. Fellas, if your girl is cheating on you, she is for the streets, same for you girls out there. There is such a thing as self-worth and Self-respect and the chances that they cheated once mean that they’ll probably cheat again. This movie makes me mad. If you want to watch a good old movie, watch all about Eve or the heiress or all this in heaven too or letter to three wives or mildred Pierce, even. If you want to see Joan Crawford in another good role that last one is a great choice. This movie made me so mad I had to sit down and write a review about it, which I never do. Please Watch a different classic movie. I don’t want this to ruin your experiences.
