Way beyond the notion of “Detective Fiction.” This artful novel unites, succinctly, complex relationships around a protagonist, the genesis of whose strength is presented in a most engaging fashion. Profound. Impossible to put down.

The three core elements that it attempts to unite as a theme (the development of the atomic bomb; Russia’s acquisition of the bomb; and attacks on Oppenheimer’s loyalty to his country by his detractors) are never fully smoothly joined into a cohesive whole. The complexity of the private lives of the principals, while truthfully depicted, intrude, rather than help to cohere. The intended scope is perhaps too ambitious.
