This movie is a go to for a gritty movies about the war between the Russians and the Germans in world war II. There is a bit of hollywoodness to it, but overall they seem to strive to show whats going on ion the mind of a German Feldweble and his recon squad during some fairly intense fighting. The movie definitely pulls towards a class struggle between two very different types of individual; Germans. An aristocratic Prussian officer who is what German troops called a "tin scavager" just trying to get his Iron Cross for his uniform before he goes back home and a middle class soldier just trying to keep himself and his men alive and in one mental piece int he insanity of combat on the Ost Front.
