This Movie is clever, insightful, thought provoking, brilliantly written and filmed and very very dark. Pheonix deserves another Oscar for his performance.
However (Spoiler Alert - and I will offend people but DILLIGAF!!! - look it up I’m Aussie!) it is not in any way connected to the brilliant criminal mastermind ‘The Joker’ from DC comics other than in name. It is a look inside the mind of a broken, bi-polar, schizophrenic sociopath. If the two films hadn’t had the ‘Joker’ name on them then they would have probably started life in a fringe film festival and then gathered cult following.
Secondly if your IQ isn’t greater than your age plus your shoe size you probably won’t understand it and most likely will give it a low rating rather than look past the fact it isn’t a typical DC movie and is more about a broken human. My advice if this is you - stay home. You won’t understand it and you will give a bad rating to a very clever film.
I basically spent 2 hours inside the mind of a broken psychologically damaged human. It was challenging but brilliant. It won’t make you feel good. The Joker doesn’t win in the end and Harley Quinn is not the femme fatale we normally get. She is also very well played and is an equally damaged, complex and failing human.
The movie was complicated but could be followed and thought provoking and a glimpse into areas of today’s society we try and avoid even if set against a predominantly 70’s soundtrack. Honestly it just shouldn’t have been linked to the DC version of the Joker but then … who would have rushed to see it.
This is a must for people with suicidal or screwed up kids, friends or other relatives but don’t expect to skip out of the cinema for ice cream and cake afterwards. You are more likely to check on the health of those you care about or if you are having a bad day make it worse!
Either way I still thought it was brilliant!!
