Road to Perdition has always been one of my top favorite Mendes films. I watched it many times with my father who thoroughly enjoyed it’s 1930s feel against a backdrop of multi faceted characters. It drew us in, time and time again, by presenting real characters whose lives and actions warranted our attention. 1917 equals that intensity and then adds another level by making us, the viewers, part of the journey. We are not just observers but wholly involved in the action. Once again, Mendes characters are worthy, deeply driven, unstoppable forces facing impossible circumstances. My only regret is that my father is no longer around to enjoy this with me. It would have made for great conversations with him.
