A "Twinkly" reimagining of Victorian England, with all of the sexism intact, but none of the racism. I thought from the style (which is excellent by the way) this would be a kids movie. But it has a strange sense of what is appropriate for the Genre.
Some incredibly violent adult on child scenes are included, moving the film into darker territory, and then the "Twinkly bits" start up again? Add to that a mystery that isn't so mysterious and a very anticlimactic third act, the movie turns into entertaining mush. Not enough of any one thing to engage with, It substitutes by being very interesting to look at.
Weak mystery plot, great actors, amazing visuals, disturbing violence.
A solid C -
