Some Spoilers.. Sorry
Honestly.. I’ve never written a review for a show before. As a ATLA lover, binge watcher, and overall supporter.. this Netflix adaptation is not doing it for me. I felt two stars would be harsh, so 3 was a happy medium. I feel like this show was rushed, and whoever came up with the idea to do it completely skipped over the original Avatar series.
The characters do NOT have their same personalities. I understand it’s a live action, but it’s the jobs of the writers, directors, actors, and etc to make sure the actors embody their characters as much as possible. It’s so many things they jammed packed into one live action episode on top of all the inaccurate details. People are in places they never were based off of the cartoon. Which is confusing because it was poorly slapped together.
The personalities are way off. Aang is not the boy who woke up from his 100 year slumber asking Katara if she would go penguin sledding with him. Sokka is not the funny young boy with the ego and sexist comments. Katara is not the smart, motherly, bossy younger sister giving her brother lip. The three of them do not have a bond in the live action because they never had the time to.
Zuko is more of a baby in the first episode for sure. Azula isn’t fierce and unbothered. Iroh is definitely not my beloved uncle. The actor who portrays him sort of fits but sounds colder. Not warm and wise speaking on old tales, tea, and etc. Don’t get me started with Aang’s interaction with Bumi. Also.. why was Teo in Omashu and not the air temple?
I feel like the writers should’ve watched each ATLA episode a dozen times before they started shooting. Hopefully season 2 they actually insert character development and stop changing the original story because Katara magically knowing how to waterbend fr is wild. I pray Toph has the correct personality execution or I might just cry lol.
