I watched the substance with a friend and his dog Murray on one of those streaming sites, and at some point during the screening, I got jealous of the dog's perception of this film.Â
Don’t get me wrong, I love gore/monster movies, but setting aside the stolen aesthetics of Kubrick ( the corridor and others ), Wes Anderson ( centered frames everywhere ), and Cronenberg ( obviously )  this film looks like it was written and shot by a film student that got, very very recently, to see all this amazing filmmaker and did a collage with all the things he liked.
When the first switch happened, with the door that doesn’t open all the way, and the white, super clean bathroom in a shitty neighborhood where nobody recognized her, I honestly wished to be Demi More's character on that exact situation.
It would be less painful than going through the rest of this movie.
