While the film was visually appealing, the writing and acting left much to be desired. Jeanne du Barry was a complicated and fascinating figure, and she deserves a vehicle that isn’t so shallow and dull. The bizarre casting of alleged abuser Depp was off-putting, as his brief performance was so forgettable and lifeless that I couldn’t help but wonder what the point was to stick him in here. Likely would’ve been a slightly better movie with a different actor. But the film itself was just disappointing and the characterization was one dimensional. It was a real struggle to stay awake.

There’s something about this movie that stuck with me. It’s flawed — I found the ending to be a bit strange and abrupt, the main character needed more backstory, there needed to be more information about the boy’s mother and what happened to her — but there was something kind of magical and uniquely beautiful about the whole thing. The way people are posting bad reviews without even seeing it reflects some of the themes of the film. An ignorant, prejudiced, hysterical mob vs. the power of truth and love. Hope people know to ignore the Depp mob.
