I had high hopes for Picard... the prospect of seeing again the known and loved characters of old etc. Truthfully this is Star Trek in name only. I've reserved judgment but am now five episodes in and it's getting worse not better. Of what we've seen so far, 70% of the content is filler nonsense that would have taken up the first half hour of a feature film. A few things I'm less than keen on (a few spoilers here);
• Picard would have never sat around after resigning if he had unfulfilled promises and his friends needed help.
• The picture painted is of a corrupt inward-facing Federation without any real explanation why.
• The future is bleak. Think back to TNG, there was by comparison so much positivity and hope for the future. The Enterprise D was a family starship.
• Needless swearing. Why? Can I watch this with my kids? No.
• Needless gore and "grit" . Everything is more serious these days, we get it. Does watching someone's eye get pulled out add to the experience? No.
• 26 episodes with lots of different stories? Nah, one over-arching is cheaper. Let's do 10 (less than half a series compared to old).
• Is there any thought provoking dialogue or storylines? Cue lens-flare.
What I used to like about Star Trek of old was commonly the underlying morality tales... the Federation were the good guys. Something is seriously wrong with the new stuff. Discovery is no better (or The Bloody Burnham Show as I like to call it).
I'm mot pretending I won't watch it until the end... of course I will. Will I re-watch repeats in future like TNG, Voyager etc? Probably not...
