This may not be a direct allegory of the Irish wars of independence and subsequent civil war but as another reviewer eloquently put it, it certainly spends time viscerally....

Did Eire engage in self destruction to rid themselves of the English?
Did the English refuse to leave Eire alone (imposing their monarch and more on independent Ireland)
Were the English capable of vengeful acts reflected in the house burning?
That donkey represents something.... victims of a civil war?
The end of the conflict is left open, as is the faintest echo of a relationship...."any time"
I was, unlike some, willing to accept the shocking premise; and brilliant acting made that easier.
