It was initially hard to keep watching part one, while trying to workout the characters, I also found it hard to work out the world around which it is trying to build. A farming community with manual farming techniques comingling with technology that could have been used to benefit them yet the world looks like it's been plucked out of the early 1800s of pioneering settlers. As the dust settles and you suspend reality, the storyline starts to open up a bit more. I wish there's longer times for character development but all seemed compressed to fit into the first two hours. Plenty of fighting scenes that I thought was visually engaging.
Part 2 was better, having accepted and now knowing the strengths of the characters (reminds me of a video game), the movie now focuses on preparing the village for war. This farming village where home are built out of staw and clay and probably a population of what looked like a handful. Plenty of gaps here but still fighting scenes are engaging and stunning with some very cool sword/sabre fights. Love the steam punk tech, although still trying to work my head around some of them.
I have seen much space opera since StarWars and this is a refreshing one to settle the coach for.
There's no notable opera style soundtrack, wish there was as this would make the film more epic.
I would certainly watch a 3rd instalment. Hopefully the 3rd might work on a bit more character development and music.
