I watched this 2017 remake before the 1973 film that so many seem to like a lot more. I don't know if it's because they watched the original one first and got their first impression there, or if it's because they really just find it a lot better. I fully disagree, because I actually enjoyed this remake a lot more than the original one. Given tiny tweaks here and there, the plot is more realistic and concise.
I find the '73 version to be quite shallow and dragging at times. Additionally, I don't know if it's the way acting was in the 70's or if it was just the way McQueen and Hoffman portrayed their respective characters, but I felt as if the character development was lacking as I didn't feel much for them. I felt little emotion between and for the two, and even felt that sometimes, it was as if they were just reciting their lines.
I felt more of a connection between Papi and Dega with Hunnam and Malek's acting. I want to give props to Rami because I really felt how fragile Dega was. I was constantly anxious to see if he was okay, just how I think Papi felt towards him, allowing me to really immerse myself with the plot and characters. It was evident here that both Papi and Dega put themselves at risk for the other, and their motives were portrayed better.
In my opinion, this remake is more disturbing, realistic, and heartfelt than the original film. It's very polished and well-thought of. The cinematography is beautiful, and by the end of it, it left me feeling a lot of emotions. This was very well executed!
