I find that when people look to a movie for only entertainment purposes, this type of movie goes over their head. If you're looking to be thrilled and on the edge of your seat or to have a great laugh, this isn't the movie for you. The 1 star reviews point this out. "No plot"... thing is, it's actually a film showcasing how the micro aggressive actions of abusive men is considered so normal that when a women feels uncomfortable, she is made to feel crazy. Crazy for feeling unsafe when she's being consistently belittled and hit on at the same time. It's not a glamorous film and it's not pretty. It's awkward,
scary and traumatizing. This movie has you wondering who to trust the moment these young women step into the pub. It was almost like I was walking into the pub myself and instantly scanning for threats. And of course there were many.
At the beginning the lady offering the women the job states it's based in an isolated area of Australia, where the mines are and it instantly made me think ISOLATION and MEN. For those complaining about where it's based... it had to be based somewhere? No matter where you base a film like this, someone is always going to think it's a misrepresentation. In the middle of nowhere is a great way to cover the theme of feeling alone and unsafe, hence why this location was selected.
It's a raw look at how "it's just a joke" excuses men for their extremely violent and aggressive behavior when they don't get their own way. It may not have been an action packed blockbuster but for those who experience these micro aggressions everyday, it validated my fears and showed exactly what happens every day. Those who didn't think anything even happened in this film are blissfully unaware of the constant unwanted attention and disrespect women receive daily for just existing as a human being. We can't even serve a beverage without our body parts and what we're willing to do with them being the centre of the discussion. Better yet, they label the blonde girl "sour cunt" because she doesn't smile nor does she agree with the men to please them. When in fact she didn't smile often because she was incredibly nervous, hyper-aware and downright terrified that at any given moment she could have her autonomy stripped away from her when one of those blokes decides to have his way with her.
5 stars for shining a light on the mistreatment we endure endlessly. It's NOT all men but it's enough men to make me feel unsafe where ever I go as a woman today.
