If you enjoy elaborate and hard to truly believe tales from a hollywood star, give it a try. You’ll get to listen to how great his life is and even about how his wet dreams lead to life revaluations.
McConaughey tries to come across as super chill, down to earth and relatable… but he’s not. The whole book just fell flat with me and came across as a memoir of a man with a highly privileged life. There’s no shame in privilege but he flaunts it while pontificating with his red, yellow, green light situations that involve womanizing, arrests, drug use, and lies. He brags and then he brags some more. Throughout the book he touts his Christianity while swearing and celebrating things in life that are not badges of honor. I’ve always liked him, but this book made me want to hear less of his voice and avoid his movies. I watched Sing 2 last night with my kids and literally had an abhorrence for the koala. I know, I know…illogical, perhaps, but honest. It’s almost like this memoir is written “in character”, or in many characters . It lacks connection and authenticity. Maybe I am way off base, but for me the more authentic and real he tried to be in this book, the more fake he sounded. I’m sorry Matthew! Really cool experiences in life were told in great detail but they were so over the top, not believable, and so oddly privileged for someone who desperately, or at least seemingly, wishes not to be . Although it was interesting to learn about his life, it was completely uninteresting and painful to listen to the braggadocios yarns of his life being spun.
Spoiler alert - his dad dies after he climaxes in bed with his mom and apparently his father told McConaughey that’s how he’d die. (That’s just the tip of the iceberg )
