After quite a few months I have properly watched a movie and what a movie this was !! At starting I was little hesitant but the growth and complexity of story really fascinated me to the core. This whole story of this 13yr old sister and her adolescent lack of understanding and thinking she is right about everything and how that turned her into this main antagonist character was striking to see. The way it how all unfolded and bad stuff happens was truly tragic to see.
SPOILER ALERT 🚨...read further only if you have seen the movie or you just wanna spoil yourself with spoilers... otherwise yes first go and watch the movie.
So now I wanna talk about some of my favourite scenes and especially yes the famous fountain scene... firstly I loved the two narratives it tell...on of the little sister Briony and the other one of Cecilia and Robbie and how much the meaning differs. And then add to that the whole meaning in Cecilia and Robbie story where it's a love quarrel but because they haven't yet confessed they don't know it and how Robbie calms that fountain water and touches the water of the fountain where Cecilia anger self entered into that was so poetic and beautiful. Show the depth of his love towards Cecilia
The second scene I wanna talk about is the scene where actually Briony talks to that injured and dying french soldier and how she comforts him with her lies pretending her to be lover to this dying soldier who is losing his mind in his last moments and confusing her with his love...here unlike Briony earlier self where she used lie to give pain , here she lying to comfort a dying soldier...that whole scene I guess also gives us the spoiler ending of the movie where the scenes of reunited Cecilia and Robbie we see, their happiness is lie comforting us the viewers.
Finally that line which Robbie writes in letter to Cecilia that is "Our story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame" is such beautiful line yet heartbreaking as how this never came true and they died separated from each other ...one on the beaches of Dunkirk and the other in bombings of London.
And this whole sin that was a commited by Briony's action can never truly be atoned ... And it's strikingly haunting that sometimes a mistake you do , you can never truly get an atonement for it.
