First of all, I absolutely loved the acting from Asher and David, as the leads. Both excellent choices, in my opinion.
While the series started off ok, it gradually started to fill with more and more plot holes that left you with more frustrating questions as the final credits rolled.
*SPOILERS AHEAD, these points are not in chronological order*
- Alan approaches Birdie in the last episode, with sheer desperation and panic as he is yet another victim to fall to Joe's schemes. Instead of being completely reasonable and offering to have the pair of them work together to bring Joe down, Birdie pushes him away and says she can't help him. Absolutely stupid to not unite and attack him from both fronts, and get Joe convicted of Fraud and countless other offences.
- What the hell happened to the 100 thousand dollars that Birdie managed to scrounge up for Joe? The fact Birdie doesn't bother to press charges against a guy who fraudulently accepted 50k from her directly, and other sources, is absolutely ridiculous.
- The fact Birdie continued to ignore the most insane red flags from Joe, puts this situation far beyond the realm of a potential real-life scenario, and into pure fiction. The constant ghosting, the fact she never saw his actual house and followed up on this, the flight to Anton's Wedding and then magically turning up, it's a joke. We're also talking about a woman in her 50's who has clearly experienced issues with previous partners, and yet continues to be as naive as an 18 year old.
- The fact that Joe is absolutely free at the end of the series just leaves a sour taste that absolutely nothing was resolved, and that even despite the article being published, he continued to scam more people.
The end of the series drastically needed to be rewritten, to allow Alan to pursue his compensation for the business deals going under, and for Birdie's lost funds. We should have seen Joe get taken to court and the series being finished with him walking into prison.
Overall, the series is watchable, but extremely disappointing and unfulfilling towards the end.
