I wanted to like this for the strong female characters if nothing else. Sadly, many of the main characters I found simply unlikable. Ava, the self centered, immature and hormonal lead/hero. Jillian, the supposed genius scientist and business owner who turned all her power over to a man while she was unsuccessful with every. single. thing. and obsessed over her son. Lilith, power obsessed and seduced by a man into betraying everything and everyone her family had supported since the 1500's Just one hardship and she beytrays her family legacy. I just can't like these women. There were so many better and stronger women in the series than the lead character that I became very frustrated watching her muddle her way through her victim mentality. I hung in there, but I kind of started rooting for the bad guys.
Add the complete lack of any believability to this. Ava is paralyzed from the neck down as a young girl. She never leaves the orphanage and is abused by the nun. Yet she suddenly has advanced knowledge of geography, speaks other languages, and knows things about the world? She becomes a bartender? Because an 18 year old nun who spent years paralyzed in an orphanage and is the halo keeper makes a great martini I guess? The nun repeatedly tells her she's a drain and yet we are to believe she was taught all these things by the same woman who abused her? So many unexplained plot gaps yet plenty of time for useless minutes of conversation that explained nothing and didn't move the story forward. Kristian, betrayer of the good and right hand to the bad and yet they never think to target him? The only thing worse than the writing in this series was the lead character's acting. If she had raised up that lighted crown one more time I may have stopped watching. The only weapon that will save the world and she's out there with it like a tambourine. Yet no one tries to destroy it either? Good grief.
