I grew up watching this movie with my family and always enjoyed it, but now as an adult I have a much more profound appreciation for it. I wouldn’t say this is a remake of the wizard of oz, it’s more of a “reimagining” as I’ve seen others describe. The cast is amazing, the music is all very original and beautiful, the costumes are extremely creative and to me it really looks like they invested a lot of time, money and heart into the sets and basically every aspect of the movie. It gives the feeling and excitement of a really well executed broadway musical in my opinion. I’m only 26 so I obviously don’t have a personal experience of the 1970s but the singing and dancing really makes me feel like I should’ve been born in that era lol. I will admit that while this is definitely a movie you can enjoy with the family, growing into my adulthood helped me understand it a lot more and be so much more appreciative of all the black culture and representation! Way ahead of its time! The fact that I see so many comments from white people saying “we shouldn’t make everything about race” doesn’t surprise me at all and is super ignorant. And in general, I don’t really understand how anyone can say this movie is so awful. I would say it’s a bit of a slow burn but so worth it. The fact that this was made during a time where technology was not even close to what it is now really speaks volumes about the amazing quality on its own. I could go on and on about this movie, it genuinely is so moving and has had such a deep impact on me through the years. To take the time to watch this movie would definitely be impactful on anybody I think! 10/10
