I am honestly mind boggled by the reception of this movie. IMDB, Rotten Tomato, etc. all state it's some kind of a masterpiece.
If you get your head out of "there are no bad movies there are just unique ones" you will quickly notice just how bad Challengers is. Music is too loud, dialogues are just bad, characters are not believable, and events aren't real. The world feels so small, narrow, and shallow that there is quite literally nobody in it except for our three main characters.
Challengers is NOT a movie about Tennis. It's a movie about twisted three-way relationship between bland characters that have little to no development across the whole movie. We do not see any hard feelings from anyone. We don't see any serious arguments either. We only hear about this stuff in 2-3 liners here and there.
Zendaya is apparently some hard tennis player who was unfortunately injured during the play. Now she is one of the best couches in the world...or whatever bla bla this movie wants you to believe. She was a high school tennis player and already injured herself at the start of college. So, her skills in terms of real professional tennis are negligeable. But movie wants us to see her as some kind of a prodigy.
Art is supposedly some kind of a big shot tennis player. However, during the movie you do not feel or see this. He breaks Patrick and Zendaya's characters apart because he is in love. However, the feeling is not mutual, and his "wife" is not even remotely interested in him.
Zweig is also supposedly a very good tennis player because he has beat Art once. However, Zweig is a down to his luck looser who never winds any championships and hence has no money. So, how exactly does he match up to this legendary racket called Art? I don't know. Movie doesn't know. Neither do writers. Here's a clip of Zendaya in her underpants instead though.
This movie is nothing but a fan service and some people just having fun with high powered cameras. I am shocked at how much mental gymnastics people are doing to hype up this movie. It's a waste of 2 hours.
