I could understand why some people believe this movie is "confusing" or " not scary". Yes, it was confusing, in the best way possible. To say it wasn't scary could make some sense. In your way of thinking, scary could mean something else to someone else. Initially, when I think of horror movies, I think big jump scares, typical scary flicks, and monsters. But this movie isn't just regular horror. It's psychologically terrifying. Believe it or not, it is possible to make something scary without jumpscares. This movie makes you think about how insignificant you are in this universe. There could be creaters, beings, that can't even be thought up by the human mind. They could be in other dimensions. Look like nothing you have ever seen before. Nope portrays that in a wonderful way. Aliens may not look like green men with large eyes. They could be a creature with no brain, no heart. Unexplainable.
Another part of the movie that I'd like to address is the Gordy scenes. That part alone makes you aware of how horrible something more feasible and "real" a situation like that could be. It helps you better understand the the motivations of the alien in the sky. It teaches a lesson about how creatures should be left alone, not exploited by humans for entertainment. Just because they are trained, doesn't mean they wouldn't kill you in an instant if provoked. The realness of the monkey scene really struck me deep, and reminded me how terrifying it would be to be put in a remotely dangerous situation with an animal. Gordy was scared, the balloon pop is all that was needed to set him over the edge, despite the training, he will always be an animal. Trying to protect it self from danger. Imagine someone took you from your home, and forced to to be entertainment for some other being. Terrifying. The fist bump with the horrified boy made it even more heart breaking.
The alien goes the same way. It is a creature, just trying to quench his hunger like every living thing does. It was ignorantly trusted by the small boy, now all grown up. He trusted it to come an hour after his show started, because it was trained to do that. It expected food at that time. It came earlier this time, expecting there may be food. And there was food, in a different form.
This movie has taken the typical alien movie, and made it into something unpredictable, and truly mind boggling. If the movie was confusing to you, you have to stop expecting a generic horror movie. Because that is not at all what you are getting. You got a movie that actually gives you something to think about, that is more haunting than just having a nightmare about it when you sleep that night. I go back, time and time again thinking about how dangerous and cruel this world, no , universe could be. You have to step outside of the box in your mind to truly understand this work of art. This movie breaks the expectation of what a horror movie should be, and shows viewers what it could be.
I highly recommend this movie if you are looking for something different than a basic predictable film. That reuses jokes that have been told to many times, themes that everyone has been familiar with for far too long. Thank you.
