From Anne Hathaway’s monologue over-spoken in the very early part of the film like a pastiche of a Humphrey Bogart film noir, in which I realised I had barely understood a sentence, I should’ve known this was going to be a disjointed, incomprehensible movie. When I’m very very old, and my mind is not what it was, all films will be this confusing. So to that extent, it’s a grim glimpse into our futures. Frankly, I understood about 60% of it (not helped by some mumbling dialogue too) and if it was a great film, like Mulholland Drive - an intentionally incomprehensible movie - I’d watch it over and over to increase that 60% level. But it’s not a great movie and I won’t rewatch it, so guess I’ll never fully know what was going on or who was who.
