This his movie left me with much more questions than answers.
the Good: what was good about this movie? Well for one the animation style is one of the best I've seen. In terms of stylized animation. it's up there with the captain underpants and the puss in boots the last wish. The character designs are amazing and the insomnia entity eyes a little clock numbers Wich are a very cool detail. The animation is fluid and up to standard for a dreamworks animation. I'll give credit where credit is due and this movie had me drawn in for the first 10 minutes as he narrated his life. The funny visuals in his sketchbook added to the dark comedy to the movie; getting a laugh out of me. Overall this movie had much potential but was ruined by the confusing plot.
The Bad: I feel as if the movie had lost the plot. About half an hour into this movie it just randomly cuts away to "present" I'm not even sure if it's the present because it cuts to the "future" at the end. OMG IS SO CONFUSING!! What threw me off the most was the daughter just added her self into the story. I thought this was supposed to be a coming of age story about facing ur fears. Then just to add a cherry on top to the melting pile of mush we already have, some random kid from the future with a ugly haircut just shows up out of the blue. This movie feels like the left overs of what was produced after puss in boots and the last wish was made. One other issue I have with this movie that's often a common trope when it comes to any movie EVER! it's just the forced conflict between the entitys and the dark. On the whole this movie had interesting concept and wonderful message but the randomness of this movie felt like I was watching a YouTube poop.
How I would fix it: I would Maybe open up to adult obRian telling the story to his daughter. That way at least we know it's a retelling instead of confusing the audience by having it halfway through the movie . If that's not possible at least open up to a narration but making sure it's clarified it's a retelling instead of throwing it in and IF you REALLY don't want to have that just don't have adult obrain in it at all!
The forced conflict bugged me. I think it's because we don't actually get any introduction or information about the entites before we even meet them. They feel slightly unlikeable because of how they interact with obrain. I think it would be a funny scene if they all played cards with orian as we are introduced to each character this would make it more interesting and charming.
I'm conclusion this movie could be so charming and funny if only they had better writers.
