I saw a screening of The Smell of Money at UNC-Chapel Hill. This documentary is about the way that factory farms knowingly cause environmental damage and health hazards to low income communities. More specifically, it covers the court battle between Smithfield (and their corrupt allies in local government) and the residents of Duplin County in North Carolina, who filed suit against them for the "nuisance" created by their toxic cesspools, their dumpsters full of rotting hog carcasses, and the fact that they were constantly spraying liquid hog waste into their yards and onto their homes. Smithfield knew that these residents were low income and mostly black, so they thought they could get away with it indefinitely. It's a real David vs. Goliath tale—enthralling, infuriating, and powerfully moving. I highly recommend it to everyone.
