First of all, I went in without any expectations that it will exceed Your Name, or be like Your Name. And if you have not watched Your Name before, then you should probably watch Weathering With You instead of Your Name first: here’s why, without spoilers.
Overall, this movie was great, but not fantastic. I am a crier, and I cry the most stupid and silly things in movie. But for this, I did not cry. Though the girl beside in the cinema begs otherwise, she was bawling. I personally feel like I cannot relate to the characters, and that the MCs, character wise, were built quite shallow. It didn’t bring that much of an emotional impact that I thought it would.
The animation is outstanding, and I will consider rewatching it, purely just because I was sitting on the first row and could make out the fuzziness of the edges of the screen from the projector so it made me, think twice about the animation. I am sure it’s outstanding, but don’t watch it from the first few rows, that’s all I got to say.
The movie itself starts off very slowly, and it tries to bring in tensions and fear but including some things and scenes, that you know will be the downfall of the characters or play a big part in the climax. It also has the soundtracks by RADWIMPS like Your Name, however the soundtracks this time really did not play as much of an impact than the songs like Your Name. It does make you feel abit of sorrow, loss, but it doesn’t come at the right times. In fact, during some scenes I felt uncomfortable when they inserted the soundtrack out of nowhere. Maybe it’s because I binged listened to the music before the movie, so maybe, don’t do that, alright.
Overall this movie is basically the anime equivalent of End Game for Marvel. My cinema exploded at every single important or funny scene and cheered loudly for many parts of the scenes. I think this is definitely a light hearted movie, you might cry, and it definitely will make you think of rain in another perspective.
For context, I cried at Your Name, and alot at that episode in Violet Evergarden, but didn’t really cry at the other episodes. I also did not cry for Gardens of Words; in fact, I disliked Gardens of Words to a small extent. I bawled my eyes out for Your Lie in April and Wolf Children, and enjoyed thoroughly, Lost Song. So for reference, see for yourself if you might cry for this movie.
