One of the most glaring problems with this movie is that it’s supposed to be set in 1986. Everything is 1990 including rocky jr sudden age leap. Even his friends were watching Christmas Vacation which wasn’t released until 1989. Also, the whole crooked accountant thing makes no sense. 1. Paulie was a street smart hustler who should have saw through a letter to him but at least he should have went to Adrian about it. The original script helped with this issue but it was changed. 2. You’d think in reality the Balboas bank would have contacted them with all that money movement and the IRS would have contacted after six years of no returns. As convoluted as all that is, Rocky’s response is horrifying. Paulie tells Rocky he should do commercials and he says some stupid line about “not a commercial kind of guy”. The lawyers then tell him he couldn’t anyway because of a criminal record????? That wasn’t a problem with the numerous commercials he did in the beginning of Rocky 3. They tell rocky with his popularity he could be out in no time but there is absolutely no follow up. The lawyers could have gone after the bank for not notifying any of the unusual money moves. In addition rocky could have set up any number of possibilities given his popularity - movie, book advance, appearances, toy line….SOMETHING but instead he gives up and even lied to his son about getting it back. This is a stunning surrender. One of the lawyers says that mickeys gym was willed “to your son in 1982”. (Responding to Adrian) which has to be overlooked error. Husband (meaning rocky) would have made sense here. Lastly, for what we know, the Balboas owed 400k on the home. You’re telling me they lost the whole home, the cars, art work etc and that never totaled 400k?! Rocky did nothing to save himself. They should have left the poor angle right out, it makes no sense.
