I think it is one of the greats, certainly the best of Tom Ford. Michael Shannon makes the film even better, but the underlying themes for me are infidelity and rejection, as felt by the Jake G character because of his ex's decision to leave him years ago, when the film begins. Jake G sends his ex, Amy Adams, a draft of his new novel, which is metaphorical, but the viewer sees the novel's plot played out within the film. The final scene, a surprise ending, elevates the film to high art.

It is one of the best films of all time, of the mystery/crime genre. I don't know why I missed it in 2001. The mystery revolves around Jack Nicholson's character's (a detective who is retiring) search for a pedophile, and what he is willing to risk to succeed in the search. The cast: Helen Mirren, Sam Shepard, Robin Wright Penn and Benicio del Toro. Nicholson's performance is as good as About Schmidt. I wish Jack had done and would do more films like this. He is so human in his old age.
