Sequels are problematic - especially those released decades after their origination film. Most are greenlighted to monetize nostalgia, leverage the waning star power of original cast members, or reframe the original story as a lead-in to a television series.
None of these reasons are valid for Top Gun: Maverick, as it is one of the top five finest action films I have ever seen.
Navy pilot Captain Pete Mitchell has aged as expected - both his personal life and professional career embody his call sign, Maverick. Now, in the twilight of his career, he is needed like never before.
Tom Cruise's commitment to accuracy is on full display with the most realistic flight scenes I have ever seen. Where the film truly shines, though, is the storyline - weaving together Maverick's tumultuous past with his uncertain future.
Do not wait until this is streaming. This film deserves the theater experience.
