I loved the last evil dead, the last evil dead with Jane Levy was exceptional, it was thought provoking, thrilling, scary and it had undertones about personal demons that the Mia character confronts as well as real ones. I got to say I didn’t think this would top it and I was right. It didn’t even come close to the 2013 version. I will give credit and say it did feel very much like an evil dead movie. Lee Cronin captured the atmospheric tone perfectly. It reminded me a bit more of the older evil dead movies versus the 2013 one. Which isn’t a popular opinion. Lots of critics have said it’s more like Evil Dead 2013. I’d argue and say “No”. It’s definitely got more of the slapstick craziness too it, not that evil dead 2013 didn’t at times but the 2013 version feels a bit more serious in tone and to me I found that more frightening, than the hokey ness of this one and the ones with Ash. I would say there were some really cringe moments in this movie and I won’t say it isn’t frightening. But for me I realized watching this I don’t like horror movies that deal with nice people in a close knit family being possessed and attacked by demons. It’s a little much. I found it a bit distasteful. Probably my fault, I knew what I was going to watch but at the same time, I had hope that Cronin would somehow pull it off without it being in poor taste. But honestly, when others in the theatre we”re laughing at the demonic family, I was disturbed and saddened by watching a family be destroyed by such evil. I guess I didn’t see much redeeming qualities and I felt the ending was unoriginal and lacked depth. Evil dead 2013 landed the ending perfectly and felt so gratifying. This movie did not feel gratifying as much as I felt sorry for the survivors. I thought with the twists and turns the 2013 version had, this one might have some as well, but it felt like no new trails made. Making it a family instead of young friends at a cabin, doesn’t make it original in my opinion. Now that I’ve watched it and heard from others about how others call it Originality, I call sort of a cop out. I didn’t expect it to be as good as the last one, but I think I sort of expected it to better than it was. I can’t say its terrible if you are a die hard Evil dead fan. There’s plenty of throwbacks to the 80’s Evil dead(s). And it is scary and cringy at times. But not always in the best way. But it is an Evil Dead Movie, so Cronin did the job if that’s all he was going for, Raimi supposedly handpicked him to create an evil dead story, and he did it his way and this so Raimi can’t complain, not that he is. The positives are Lee is a fantastic director and I love how he incorporated a little back story in the beginning, he knows how to get you invested, but what’s the point of being invested if it feels like it doesn’t go anywhere. He execution and creativity I think could’ve been more inspiring, but he succeeds admirably at direction, camera work, and The actors he choose are all really on their game. And he does know how to make a scary movie technical wise. The ambiance of the film is scary gorgeous, it’s clear he’s talented in the regard of directing and editing, plus the dialogue and wise lines are on point as well. He’s got the means to be one of the best directors in Hollywood. Just because I don’t think he succeeded admirably at this one, doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s got mad chops and is probably one day going to blow it out of the water with something. I’m sure he will rise to fame, but Evil Dead Rise, I don’t think is it sadly.
