Just saw Thappad in Prime. Though the concept is good and the man should not have done what he did, but then how will people move forward if they do not forgive others mistakes if it was a sincere apology.
The woman did not know what to do after the slap. Whether she wanted to live with him or not.
And the director did not know how to take the movie forward.
Finally once the man that he left everything for her she started seeing him favourably and who knows in future she might also agree to marry him.
If at the end she wanted to be with him and wanted him to be in her kids life, then why do all this trouble of court case and every thing. The reason she knew it would not work out with him is because that the man might hit her again. So how can she be comfortable with him being near the kid. Who knows if he raises then hand on her kid.
So the ending is flawed. She should have just cut her ties with that family and move on instead of still maintaining a good relationship with the man's family and hoping one day she might again be a part of that family. She should have just taken a clean break and live a new life where the man's shadow also does not fall on her. But this being India, still patriarchy runs high, she was ok to compromise for the kids sake and become a typical Indian woman. And, since the man said sorry, her wish is also fulfilled and she got a closure.
I feel this movie was made more for punchlines than than to give a lesson to the society or offer any alternatives.
This will only be remembered as the movie that people wanted to see why Tapsee took that stand just for one slap and then feel disappointed in the end that she still wants to be with the man and his family (though it is not shown in the movie, but they will realise that once the kid is born and of they have the child's well bein in their heart).
