I just returned from the cinema with three tween girls ( 11 and 12yo). This was a very weird movie. I would love to say I liked it as there are definitely some positives: stunning New Zealand scenery and Nell Fisher’s acting however this movie is suffering from identity crisis. Bookworm really doesn’t know what audience it targets. The trailer is misleading and promises a family adventure movie with laughs and magic while in reality it has some disturbing content best suited for more mature audiences. Creepy couple of kidnappers is the start but the worst is a very realistic and graphic accident where a lead girl ends up crushed by a massive log. My 11yo daughter was very disturbed and we saw a 7yo girl burst out crying and being ushered out of the cinema by her parents. The film ends up with a disturbing car crash to top it off. Be warned.
