Too large a departure from the book for my taste. The incesant flicking back & forth in time destroyed any pace & momentum to the main story. I thought the 'guilt after the empire' moralising was unecessary and leadenly done. Those of us who love the book want what it says on the cover - if those at the BBC don't like the book or the story or the mores and attitudes of the time - don't do it; if they think they can do alien invasions better and with more hand-wringing guilt then do it as a Dr Who special and leave H G Wells alone.
