So I kinda wrote out a script for a movie review episode over the movie, and just so I could like help people to understand why you can't hate on something for one thing only, you have to have furious intent only to be disappointed in the end, but there's a reason why I gave it 5 stars...
So I'll just put down part of the script, and um you can read it...
Turning Red is a movie based around 13 year old Meilin Lee, who is a girl undergoing a certain change in emotion, Mei is undergoing adolescence, not her period, the movie makes a metaphor, and jokes around it, however it is more about adolescence than what people who have not seen the movie think it is…
Anyways, she gains the ability to turn into a red panda, and the size is actually based on how strong her emotions are, since this seems to be the best working theory. A little bit in Mei discovers that her favorite boy band is coming to her hometown of Toronto, this boy band is called 4TOWN, and she wants a way to raise the money to go, however she can’t think of how.
Her friend group which include of Priya, Abby, and Miriam, tries to help her think, but no ideas really come in, so Abby makes her think about something too hard, and she goes full panda, only to be discovered by a side character, and it causes her to think about the new way to make money, and or, to hustle the panda, based off of how adorable it is, I MEAN WHO THE FRICK CAN’T SAY NO TO THE CUTENESS OF THIS FORM. It’s so fluffy, and adorable, Pixar did an amazing job with this model. Anyways, let’s quickly sum up the rest of the movie, Relatives come to perform a ritual, Mei gets invited to a birthday party, Abby mixes up concert dates, and Mei goes full psycho mode, she gets angry at the birthday boy, and her mom gets mad after the ritual fails because Mei purposely wants to keep the panda, and the rest of the family has to save her, and there are plenty of wholesome moments through the movie.
So now that that is out of the way, I’m going to state my standpoint on the movie.
So why do I love it so much? Well, the panda design is perfect, honestly it feels right for the movie, but this isn’t all, there’s the cultural standpoint I have on the movie, and I will say it’s amazing the way the movie was plotted out, the final story was actually really good, but this is not the only reason. The cringe is a reason I love the movie, but then again, it’s also a reason I hate it.
Anyways, the movie itself is amazing, there are plenty of wholesome moments such as Mei’s dad coming out and talking to Mei about something I actually am living with as of writing this review. You make room for bad things, a great phrase to show a person's character! Anyways, There’s the final scenes where Mei’s grandmother and Mei’s mother share a wholesome moment, and Mei and her mother sharing a wholesome moment, and also the friends of Mei sharing plenty of wholesome moments. This all just sort of made the movie really great, I wasn’t even disturbed by the jokes about the period, it’s treated as something so terrible when Pixar has worked with these kinds of things before. Also the character designs are great, and also the way they used real world implications. Also the soundtrack (By itself) Is really good, and it works for the movie.
