I knew not to get my hopes up. I’d never even known of a sequel to Chinatown, despite it being one of my all time favourite films. The film had an aura of rushed and budget attributes. The glorious sound track of the original film nowhere to be heard, only some generic orchestral swells here and there with the 90s ubiquitous reverb laden drums to indicate suspense and danger. The heavily saturated colours and contrast give it a video-esque quality. This all could be over looked if it weren’t for the fact that following the plot was virtually impossible. Scenes were tacked together without flow or a sense of continuity. Little was left to the audience to discover on their own. Instead, the viewer is required to wade through tremendous amounts of dialog to extract what could have been conveyed simply with good visuals, spaced out dialogue and better continuity.
