I first read the paperback version of this novel circa 1985-1987. Now in 2021 I'm re-reading it in the .epub version. I think it is one of the best novels ever written by a novelist. The plot lines are ragged, expect the unexpected with twists and turns in the story that will catch you unawares. Just like in real life. Mr. Michener writes with humility and sympathy with the virtuous characters portrayed in his work.
It is also a monument to the tragedy that befell the First Nations of America who are unable to hold their own against the relentless onslaught of newcomers encroaching on their native lands. It tells of love, greed, ambition, naivety, cruelty and a whole host of human excesses.
If I were to compare this to Lord of the Rings, Michener's Centennial would come up ahead.
