Author kept inserting himself into the story. Also, he played Monday morning quarterback way too often. Of course in hindsight the escape could've been prevented. Most everything that happens when looked back upon could be prevented. The facts of the case was what was compelling. Ice cream and lunch in Canada? Then liberally injecting his own life into the story, it's not about the author it's about the escape.
