As suggested by another reviewer, some in the writing and direction of 'Evil' are clearly channeling Hitchcock.
Witty and thought provoking, esoteric and tear-jerking, the screenwriting rarely feels contrived or 'telegraph-ee'. Rather, I am regularly surpised, occasionally even brought to being surprised-out-loud despite the fact I am sitting in my darkened living room alone!
If Hitchcock were writing/directing for streaming providers in today's media world, this is what he would be doing, and the gifted regular stars and returning guest stars would be the guys you saw in North by Northwest, Rear View Window, and Vertigo. Loads of character actors that you will recognize and a few surprise repeating guest stars flesh out the core trio who are simply great to watch and clearly having fun - even when some scenes were probably not much fun at all!
Cast in a world where you can realistically see your friends and relatives (and maybe yourself) - everyone has their strange, and weirdly-flavored, own set of reality, challenges, world view, and look - just friggin odd stuff to deal with. No one character is perfect, they all have flaws, and some may be greater than others, but the great thing about the show is that your point of view will make that different for each and every one of you.
If you don't see demons or unicorns in your regular day to day life, or know someone that does, a lot of the other things the story requires you to grok will probably nail it for you.
Yeah, the kids are loud, they reduce some lines to gibberish. As they should. They are an artifice, and a collective sort of character that parents recognize (if they had more than one child). In Pythonian or Shakesperian humor, they're the equivalent of a sort of cartoonish mob, or group of friends role. It may be to break up foreboding or serious brooding, change the tone of an episode for the next cycle or deliver information to the audience that would otherwise require a narrator. Consider them like sherbet between courses as a palate cleanser, and occasionally as Mercutio and Benvolio, helping us to understand what has happened to save a scene or two.
Oh yeah, and pay attention to the music. Worth the listen. A must watch, I am making a point to watch the careers of those who have contributed to this project. It is sure to point the way to other productions that don't insult the audience's intelligence.
