in order for a society to survive on an uninhabitable planet, you need many resources before hand before you even need to consider building houses. Of course for a planet to be habitable you need water and oxygen. But since the freezing point of water is 0 degrees. The planet must also become warmer. In the case of mars, the best way to warm up the planet is of course to introduce carbon dioxide and perform an accelerated greenhouse gas affect. The introduction of energy and its waste product heat would also increase temperatures to a liveable climate.
One method for getting life on Mars is to construct a iron plant on the surface, extracted from the Iron Oxide soil. Not only would this produce heat from the energy needed, powered by solar panels, but the separation of iron from oxygen would produce oxygen into the atmosphere. The increase in temperature can then allow smaller lifeforms to exist such as microbes, not only increasing carbon dioxide levels, but also can help put essential elements into the soil helping with the creation of trees and plants. This can then help increase the oxygen levels allowing more complex lifeforms to exist. With all these factors, humans could live on mars, and using resources from the trees and the iron plant, will humans finally be able to construct building and cities on mars. And of course having cities and societies on Mars would help boost an economy allowing more resources to be built in the expansion, colonisation and the Terraforming of the great red planet
