This is an extraordinary book and has been made into magnificent mini series. The story is about way more than war and the heroic struggle against totalitarianism. It contains many archetypal motifs, which are seen through the lens of fallible human nature. The material nature of light (electro magnetic energy) experienced in , explosions and refraction from a diamond are juxtaposed with the aural reception of words of truth and love. These words change the lives of two disparate characters a blind girl and a German soldier who had been listening to them. The book and film probe the very sensitive space in which good people with good intentions are blinded by patriotism or a heroic sense of duty. I hope the book becomes a college or university set work.
