Having spent a little time in midtown Manhattan in 1984 I have to say that this is fairly authentic as far as the look and feel but all through the show starting with the first season set in 1971 I would also have to say that this show frequently portrays phrases, items, attitudes and other things that didn't exist in the 70s and 80s such as bar codes on cigarette packs. Few if any scanners existed prior to the mid to late 80s. I was there, I lived it. They weren't there.
This is not the only show that makes these mistakes. I realize that the vast majority of people watching will never notice such things have a clue but having grown up in the 60s it just drives me crazy when show runners put something in a show that just plain didn't exist until decades later. It really sort of ruins it for me when I see it.
Would you buy it if a non-timetravelling character in Victorian times mentioned, for example, "ground zero" or "drone strikes"
or whipped out a vape pen? Not me.
