Clear light of Day by Anita Desai is a novel of Chekhovian genre. Being a novel under this genre Desai's choice of word is much authentic. We all love to be in peace. There are people who are in lifelong peace without even knowing the meaning of peace. And there are people who are staying in discomfort while searching for peace. Desai portrayed it through her characters like- Baba and Bimla. Bim, a girl leading the lives of her brothers, sister, aunt and the household turned her to a woman full of noise, hatred, anger inside her. Once, a girl full of joy, passion transformed herself into a rude lady because of her surrounding. Baba, Bim's youngest brother, who was a living toy only.Baba was unable to talk, unable to do any activity. All he knew to do, was to be busy with his old gramophone, and sometimes to play with pebbles. Seeing toward Baba, Bim lived with all hesitations in their old house in Old Delhi. She couldn't forgive her Oldest brother Raja, because of his sudden transformation to her landlord from her loving brother, with whom she shared most precious moments of her early life. The lack of communication between Raja and Bim made Bim cruel toward Raja. On the other hand Tara, Bim's younger sister, lived in abroad with her husband and daughters, was somewhere felling guilty all her life. Tara couldn't help Bim in Bim's toughest time. Tara was opposite of Bim. Where Bim was courageous Tara was lack of smartness. This lack of her made her stand backward all the time. Holding these all kind of relationships somewhere Bim was frustrated for long.
Through all these family pictures Desai created her Clear Light of Day, where till the last Bim learnt to forgive. By forgiving Raja, Bim liberated herself from all the victim energy. By forgiving herself for all the unwanted words she expressed to Baba sheagain welcomed the divine light inside her. In a simple note, Bim was always full of love inside her but she was unaware of it for a long time. Thus Desai described about the little lives full of great achievement like strength, divinity through her this great novel.
