One of my favourite games now. The premise is that there is a magic paint brush that lets people colour the world. Of course, someone has to wield the brush so through history, there has been many wielders that have used the brush to bring color and life to the world. However, one day, the world turns black and white, and you find the brush laying on the ground. Pretty interesting ey? Anyways, the main gimmick is that you can paint pretty much anything. The whole world is a coloring book, and that's one of the only flaws in the game. The concept of being able to color the entire world is very enticing to me. It's very satisfying to finish drawing a room and there game fully supports that kind of gameplay. One of the major themes of the game is that anyone can be an artist, so whether you have no idea what you're doing, or you do art for a living, you can still make the world look beutiful. However, I know that some people aren't looking for that kind of experience. Most negative reviews of the game are just people looking for a competitive game with action and high stakes. Do not go into this game expecting too much intensity. Instead, Chicory tries to be a much more meaningful game. Telling a deep and relatable story about depression, expectations, and perfectionism. Basically, Celeste but with painting, which brings me to my next point: the music. Lena Raine, the composer for Celeste and a bit of Minecraft, has made another masterpiece of an OST with this game. With the artstyle and music, you can really feel what the game is trying to tell. The game is wholesome and funny when it needs to be, but as it delves into it's deeper topics, the game changes alongside them, with the music growing darker, and way cooler for the bossfights which are also incredibly creative and pretty as, again, the main mechanic is coloring. But that doesn't make the game get boring fast. Chicory is also a metroidvania, and comes with all the perks (and downsides) of that. As you bond with the brush, you learn new abilities that allow you to explore the beautiful world and progress in the game. Metroidvania's aren't for everyone but it really does create an amazing sense of actually exploring the world yourself as if you're going on a grand journey.
In conclusion: The game is overall really amazing. I mean, I wrote this massive review because of how much I like it. If you're interested in the game, then you'll probably love it. If you've read this review and you're still not interested, then maybe it isn't for you... but maybe still give it a try :)
