Slight Spoilers
I am conflicted about the movie because while I understand the themes they wanted to keep with, I felt the unsatisfactory ending harpooned it.
However, that may likely be because of my own bias concerning the genuine belief of heaven and hell, and lack of spirituality. I felt the eternal damnation ending for George wasn't good enough as a consequence for his heinous actions, especially the unclear suicidal execution of that damnation.
Now, maybe if they'd depicted a bit stronger that he'd been trying to flee (like a packed bag, pulling all the money out of his bank account etc.) and THEN he tries to escape with the boat only to be charlie-horsed by the gates of hell?
Other than that, I do love movies that have the 'duality of ghosts' theme, and I absolutely adore Amanda Seyfried in this (well, I adore her in anything, really), so I do have to give this four stars.
That said, it was an excellent movie to kick off Halloween season with (I know it's still August, but since I'm ready for summer to be over, I've started a bit early lol) and I might add this to my yearly Halloween media list.
