At first, I was ecstatic to watch this. Finally, a faithful adaptation, yeah, no.
While the series is not bad, it's a fairly good, it's very unfaithful to the books. The movies were really good, just I hated them because they were nothing like the books. Now, this series is even further from the books than the movies, which Rick promised would not happen.
The Mrs Dodds fight was terrible. happening in the middle of everyone, all she dod was pounce and then Percy's sword just randomly uncapped without him doing anything. Then Mrs Dodd's somehow spoke to Percy without her mouth moving, not to mention that Percy did nothing in the fight, stealing an important moment from him. Also, in the books the water engulfs Nancy Bobofit, in the series, it seems Percy is a son go Zeus because he stretches his hands out and she is pushed back. Percy is NOT Vecna people.
Gabe is nothing like described in the books, being irritating, but not abusive and harmful. We find him annoying, but he don't hate him. Sally is completely different and I feel that both episodes were extremely rushed. Cutting an essential scene like the bus scene where the Fates cut the string for Luke's death, disappointing. Not to mention how Percy finds out about his heritage, through his mother, and Percy being expelled for the Nancy incident when in the books, he got in trouble, but not expelled. The Minotaur fight was anti climactic as well. Episode two is better. I don't like the start and it is extremely different to the books, but I'll accept it. Mr D is similar to the books, although his confrontations with Percy are not. The series is average at best and nothing like the books. To show how I scored it, look below.
1 star: Completely unfaithful, adding unnecessary changed while removing essential scenes, terrible script, bad actors and bad CGI. Bad casting.
2 stars: Very unfaithful, removing important scenes (tick), bad actors who show little depth, bad script lacking good writing and average CGI. Bad casting (Tick).
3 stars. Somewhat faithful, with important scenes still cut, but new scenes that are important added. Average acting and an average script (tick) with average CGI. OK casting.
4 stars: Very faithful to the books with only some mess-ups. Good acting (Tick) with a good script and great CGI. Great casting.
5 stars: Incredibly accurate, only altering the story to make it better. Incredible script with incredible CGI (Tick) and incredible acting. Incredible casting
So that is (2 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5) / 5 = 3 stars (rounded obviously).
I just watched the third episode and once again, it is nothing like the books. Annabeth is the one who identifies the furies in the bus and has a literal conversation with Alecto. Percy is portrayed at useless in this scene as Annabeth kills Magera, not him. Then the woods with the dialogue and the song which is a poor attempt at humour. Annabeth figures out who Medusa is straight away and the whole fight is different. Also making Medusa have had a crush on Athena originally, really Rick, now nit only are you being unfaithful to your material, but to ancient Greek myths as well. I must say though, i did actually like the bus change as we di really see just how fierce and skilled Annabeth is. I appreciate that although i wish they had given Percy some glory. The Medusa scene I dislike, except for the fight which I think is actually ingenious and should have happened in the books with the invisibility cap, but before that with Medusa was pretty dumb, especially with the crush in Athena part. All in all though, i did not hate the episode. I guess im getting used to it not sticking to the books at all and am starting to accept that.
