I really like the premise and was excited to see my religion make it to mainstream but the storytelling was not very linear or concise. So many timelines, so much exposition from Allan's character. A good movie should show, not tell.
The people all felt like caricatures of what someone from outside the faith would assume. I've been LDS in Utah all my life and the way the "normal good mormons" in the show talked and acted (Brenda, Pyre) was what I would consider extremists. It was like watching an alien trying to pretend to be human.
I think the actors were all great they just had not a very good script (why does everyone speaks in scripture? Bizarre!) The biggest issue I have is they took a real murder of a real woman and so horribly misrepresented her, her beliefs, and the story in general to try to make a point about how men can use religion as a weapon for justifying evil.
That's a great thesis, again very interested in that idea. Use a fictional story then. Don't pretend this is true crime when it's just not.
I loved the partner! Gil Birmingham did great! His character was the only one that really felt genuine and like a real person. Interesting premise, but I would not recommend.
